· History: The temple was built in the late 16th century, during the reign of King Vimaladharmasuriya I, and has undergone various renovations and expansions over the years.
· Architecture: The temple features a blend of traditional Sri Lankan and colonial architectural styles, with intricately carved wooden doors, ornate decorations, and vibrant murals depicting the life of the Buddha.
· Relic: The sacred tooth relic is kept in a series of ornate caskets, with the outermost one made of gold. The relic is not displayed publicly but is shown during special ceremonies.
· Ceremonies: The Esala Perahera, an annual festival held in July or August, features a grand procession with dancers, drummers, and beautifully adorned elephants, showcasing the relic in a ceremonial casket.
· Significance: The temple symbolizes the sovereignty of Sri Lanka and plays a crucial role in the island's cultural and religious life.

Bahirawakanda Temple
The temple on the hill of Bahirawakanda, called the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, is most well-known to tourists for its giant Buddha statue, which can be seen from almost any point in the city of Kandy. Built in 1972, the statue shows Lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose, which is the position associated with his first Enlightenment. Reaching a height of more than 25 metres, it is one of the tallest statues of Buddha in Sri Lanka.
